Flynn was born to a family of Caribbean Reef Shark like Zoras and from there, he grew up in Zora’s domain with the rest of them. He was a rather calm and quiet Zora, preferring to just sit around and observe things than run around and play with the rest of them. He couldn’t and can’t tell you why, he just didn’t want to partake in anything like that.
Despite him denying the presence of Hylia as well as not being too big a fan of purity and holiness, he still bowed and took the prayer when he became a Zora warrior. He just didn’t believe in a goddess that sat back and placed the fate of the world she supposedly created into the hands of just two people. For a goddess that sure liked parenting from afar, letting others make their own mistakes, she sure as hell didn’t trust the rest of everyone else to defend themselves from an ‘evil’ she couldn’t be arsed to contain. It’s because he held all of these opinions for her that many didn’t like him, and it’s also the reason why it was so easy to frame him for treason and have everyone go along with it.
Denied a fair trial, Flynn was cast out of Zora’s domain at the age of ninety-eight. Still in what was considered young adult years. But even barred from Zora’s domain, removing his last name and being marked as a traitor to his kind, he couldn’t catch a break. His former battle companions chased him all around Lanayru, Faron and Necluda in circles for nine years, trying to catch up to the smaller Zora. Eventually, they caught up to him and effectively cornered him at Shatterback point where they beat him to a pulp, leaving him for dead.
Flynn fought for survival there, left exposed to the elements and no strength to hunt properly. He tried calling out to Hylia for some sort of help, but got no answer. He sat there and continued holding on, struggling about in the winter of the land, frigid and weak until he came down with a fever from infection. Cursing Hylia’s name, he decided to try another route when the darker voice that beckoned him spoke back up.
It demanded eternal loyalty to its name and in turn, it'd make sure he'd keep his life. Well, he had no idea of any life goals anyways and he was near dead, but he wasn't anywhere near ready to die despite those two things. He made the exchange and passed out. Later, he was woken up by splitting pain and when he looked down at himself, he was different, and his wounds no longer festered.
When he stood from the ground, it was much farther away. His fins were gone and so was his tail. His webbing between his fingers and toes was almost completely gone. He also felt… Thicker? His arms were much more built than they were as a zora, and the same went for the rest of his body. It’s taken him a few months to adjust to his new form, but he’s content with it. Something about the idea of darkness was soothing anyways.
He may not be able to swim up waterfalls anymore, and he may swim considerably slower than his past form was, but his new strength was something else. Where he couldn’t do jack shit on land like he used to, he was now running better and hefting more weight.
With a new style about him, as well as actually wearing pants and sandals now, he’s hell bent on creating and following through with a plot to strike down the ruler of the Zora, and to send the domain into chaos. And he’ll drag any fin licking fool to the murk that stands in his way.
