We are both sick
souls with the same disease.
Some nights rest comes in the form of a coma, others pleasantly dreaming being rocked away on the seas of serenity while others can be locked in a state of suspension between wakefulness and unconsciousness.
Like being suspended in a void and you can neither breath or break away to reach the surface. Death seems imminent but it never comes.
Until a large hand reaches down unafraid of the depths to grab your sorry ass out of your predicament and then drop you to regain your composure on your own. Yara gasped as her lungs pushed the water out of her lungs with a tremendous coughing fit as she grabbed furiously at the ground. Once she was able to breath again she looked around for the subject that had unceremoniously forced this waking hell upon her. But, no one was there and there was no trace of him if he had even existed or been there in that moment. Every time she felt herself slipping towards the empty grave of death there was always a force bigger than her that fought her, preventing her from letting go or giving up.; as if it had something more in-store for her and her irrelevant life.
She let out a growl as vertigo rolled over her and she fought to keep whatever contents of her stomach she had down as a dark presence wrapped itself within her mind and taking hold of the part of her that was a mangled mess of trash. She could sense it examining it with disdain
“You are weak” he said after a moment disdain dripping heavily with every word the faceless entity uttered as he began to dig deeper pulling the mass apart. If she tried to fight against it he discarded her feeble efforts and punished her with another wave of pain and nausea.
It…or He…or It she couldn’t tell it fazed between the two and the agony of it all was affecting her ability to differentiate. Either way it continued to examine and pull everything about her apart as if trying to determine what could be done with the useless garbage that laid before it. After a while it began to pull the death and decay away and separate it from the rest of her. It was a painful ordeal as he worked and Yara found herself writhing on the muddy ground in agony trying to keep quiet and not let the pain get the best of her.
Eventually he stopped revealing a small raw, mold-less shape and a wave of approval radiated from it; almost a paternal sense of endurement but underneath there was an echo of malice. “Your old self is no longer living, your weakness consumed you but I have restored to you yourself in exchange for a life bent to my will,” as it spoke it devoured all that it had discarded from her and she felt a chill of petrification flow through her as the darkness and malice grew before her.
Clawed talons reached out of the darkness and grabbed at the vulnerable shell before it and sunk its blackness into it permeating its pink flesh as she let out an agonized scream. She felt fire in her veins and raw strength fill the holes inside herself as if she were shedding the old skin. The doubt and pain that had once clouded her vision now dissipated and she saw clearly for the first time in her twenty-two years of life that she was more than the sum of her past. The past was dead and now devoured by an entity she could only rationalize as the Father of Malice.
“Rise now, Daughter of Calamity; confront that which has bound you to a life of meaningless bondage and claim your place beside your brothers and sisters before your King.”
The entity raised itself up to its fullness and she felt as if she would be overwhelmed by sheer vastness of the darkness before her. However, she did not quake in fear this time but felt empowered by the raw force of will that flowed through her veins as the voice reverberated around her “Let your trials begin.”
Coming out of herself Yara began to pick herself up and all remnants of the pain before was replaced with a new sense of vigor. She began to walk away from the dark pool behind her, she needed to determine her location so she could get back home. If she was gone too long Axel was bound to notice her negligence and she didn’t need his deadpan silence that crossed between rage and disappointment. She guessed it was better than indifference and she steeled herself for her next task of proving herself capable and deserving of more than begrudging fury. His respect was going to be a hard thing to earn but she was determined to accomplish it…someday.
She didn’t have much more time for her thoughts when a shadow grabbed onto her hair pulling her back towards the pool. She growled angrily and fought against it, her head protesting loudly as she pulled against the shadow's grip. Her struggles where fruitless and she was dragged back until another two hands shot out at her and pushed her to the ground. As her mouth was filled with muddy earth she felt two more hands sufficiently pin her legs and she began to panic as terrors flashed before her eyes. Strong hands holding her down, telling her she was worthless and weak; tearing every volition of choice away from her as she was beat relentlessly.
She desperately tried to summon Jett but he was no where near her and she couldn’t sense him. Use that which I have given you. The voice echoed through her mind calming her panic and she felt a surge of rage and she envisioned the earth around her rising up in a protective cage of spires to impale and severe the grips that bound her. In doing so the earth raised about her in various angles impaling the shadows; one cut through the hair bundled at the back of her head shaving her long locks short.
As the shadows dissipated she laid there in the mud panting heavily at the amount of energy that spell had drained her. She didn’t know where it came from but the entity inside her radiated a pleased amusement at her efforts. She retracted the spires as she stood resolutely. It was time to leave this black pit of worthless despair behind her.
She walked for sometime through the thick forest; darkness clung to every shadow making it appear to be a deep dark well of ambiguities and though it peeked her curiosities she resisted the urge to explore, that was not her mission.
Her mission was to find home before an unknown evil devoured her; but the monsters of the past have a way of not releasing their prey once they have sunk their teeth into it.
She heard the sound of a weeping child off in the distance and the scared child inside of her grabbed hold of her propelling her towards the sobs. That same child within her was tender hearted and had maternal qualities and the instinct to find the child overrode her other desires.
She waded through bogs and thick vines until she happened upon a child no older than 5 huddled at the based of tree. Yara started realizing that she had been nearly the same age when she felt the gaping hole of abandonment appear in her life; though she had been raised by other people who called themselves “mother” and “father” it never felt genuine. She approached the child gingerly reaching out to comfort them.
“Shhhhh, I am not here to harm you,” she said softly resting a hand on the child's head. The large deep black eyes looked back at her and she realized then this was another terror of hers, but this one wasn’t attacking…yet anyway.
It all happened too quickly for Yara to make much sense of what occurred next as the child crawled into her arms and wrapped itself tightly about her, the body melting into an oozing mass. Yara felt teeth sink into her arm and she cried out in a surprised scream as she felt this child feed as it began to incapacitate her within the viscous goo.
Yara grunted coming to her knees under the weight of the mass pushing her down and she felt weaker as her blood was being drained. She needed to act fast and she grabbed for a dagger at her belt. Wrapping her hands about it she began to plunge it into the ooze and it recoiled from her in pain, the grip about her arm releasing as the ooze morphed back into the image of Yara as a small child.
It was crying desperately again pleading “no don’t kill me” and as Yara hesitated another moment being frozen from the likeness before her it attacked her arm again determined to finish the job.
This time Yara let out a furious pained scream and she stabbed relentlessly at the entity as it morphed back into the child, then into her mother, her father…even herself now. She let out a panicked scream as she stabbed into the woman's heart and then the ooze congealed and then melted away.
Yara stared blankly at the earth, her body shaking from both her fear and exertion as tears began to stream down her face.
She felt a shadowy hand rest upon her shoulder and then tilt her head up; she found herself staring into the burning pits of the entity before and it smiled malevolently at her. “You’ve passed your second trial Daughter…in my kingdom there is no place for attachment to the past there is only presence of mind in the moment and dedication to the future. That which you longed for in the old you will be rewarded and so much more in my kingdom. Child, you have my blessing.” His hand wrapped around her wound and she felt her skin burn as the marks collected together burning into her flesh the mark of the Yiga Clan. It glowed a deep fire red and then resolved into black as charred flesh.
His words weaved through her like a bitter poison laced with the secrets to the antidote but withholding the fullness of understanding. It soothed her though and she felt fresh resolve alight within her heart as He pulled her too her feet. With the wave of his hand she was standing at the brink of the thick woods faced with a sheer cliff.
“At the top lies that which you seek, it is your duty to strive for it and take hold of it. Claim your birth right as my Daughter and fulfill my commands and they will be granted to you.”
With that the figure dissipated leaving her at the face of this cliff with no clear path save to grab onto the stone face and climb.
With each foothold she pulled herself higher up the face of the cliff taking it slow and steadily. About ¾ of the way up though the face of the cliff became less welcoming and she found that searching for a foothold was progressively more and more of a problem. Her arms where shaking from the strain of holding her body a few hundred feet above solid ground and only another fifty or more so to go. She finally found a grab hold and reached for it only to have it crumble under her hand and she began to fall.
Except…she wasn’t falling but floating. She looked around panicked to see Illia floating lazily beside her with that playful grin of her. “Come now, that’d be a nasty fall. What were you thinking?” she trilled playfully and she created a large gust of wind that sent Yara flying to the top of the cliffs edge and she grabbed onto it.
Between the shock of the fall and then the gust she hadn’t been prepared the grab fully onto the ledge and she began to slip again this time not having enough to grip onto. She was sure to fall know even with the aid of her friend. As she was falling backwards though a large tanned hand reached out and grabbed for the front of her shirt and hauled her dead weight up. She hadn’t realized she had closed her eyes so upon opening them she was faced with the severe face of her Master as he pulled her up the rest of the way.
As her feet touched the cliffs edge Axel’s visage vanished before her and she was left with a blank and empty space before her.
Yara started awake in her bunk, a cold sweat covering her body. She laid there for a moment listening to the night sounds as a winter breeze blew through one of the windows. It had only been a dream.
Yara sighed sitting up reaching to brush her hair out of her face to find that it was cut short a pile of her hair beside her and her knife within her hand. What the hell? She wondered in surprise and winced at the pain in her left forearm. She looked down at it to see two gaping holes as if she had stabbed herself. She squinted and a headache split her head as she recalled hitting a drinking game with some of the others too zealously.
Getting up she found her way blearily to the bathroom and stared in the mirror looking at a face that she no longer recognized. Whatever she had done to her hair couldn't be fixed now. Oh well.
She set to work cropping the rest of her locks so that the longest strands touched her chin in the front and the shortest at the nape of her neck. It was like cutting the old decayed life away so that new growth could sprout. She was a Daughter of the Great Calamity now and she was going to have to weed out the old to make room for the new.
